How I was forced to become A Tutor

Have you ever thought about becoming a tutor? Well I have and let me tell you it’s not as easy as you think. I first came across this idea when my mom suggested I get a “real job.” Basically, insinuating that my time spent at this place called “High school” wasn’t enough for her.  I did my usual tantrums and complaining which normally works.  But this time she was not budging. I had only one move left. It was very risky, and I wasn’t quite sure if this was the time to bring out the big guns, but I had no choice—Daddy.  As I’m sure you concluded from the title you know I lost the battle. The outcome however wasn’t quite what I expected.

Work, inherently, isn't designed to be fun. But I was determined if I had to work I will do something fun.  The amount of jobs that went through my head were all nothing but unrealistic dreams for a 16-year-old: wedding designer, Pop star, Victoria secret model or even a lawyer like my parents. When discussing my options with my parents both looked at each other and started to laugh as if I was a standup comedian. Which by the way was on my list. The discussion then led to the idea of tutoring. I had just received my ACT scores back and my parents were both impressed with my near perfect score. “ACT Tutor!” My father suggested. I could be a tutor? I pondered that that thought for a week. After receiving my progress report for the semester, I realized that I could be a great tutor. I had all A’s and was taking 4 AP classes. I finally then concluded that taking on tutoring as a part-time job comes with several benefits that fall right along the lines of what I was looking for: Flexible hours, impressive listing for my resume, great pay and the emotional and intellectual fulfilment.

Now that I am currently tutoring on the platform HeyTutor, I love it.  Not only that but tutoring is very much so rewarding. You have the chance to make a real difference in the life of a child and ultimately, the greater community. It is easy and fun, and you get to experience your student’s positive responses and growth. There are so many perks on becoming a tutor but the best reason to become a tutor is all eyes are on you. Every child loves attention, and tutoring allows you to provide it and receive it. The attention can bolster the student’s sense of self-worth and self-confidence. If there is one thing I learned from this whole experience is that It takes responsibility, challenging work and patience to be a tutor, so be prepared for those elements if you decide to take it on. It may not be easy, but if you genuinely commit and dedicate yourself, you’ll find many rewards.
